Basic ISP Failover with MikroTik There are multiple ways to achieve ISP redundancy with MikroTik. Some ways are more complex and offer additional functionality. This article serves as an introduction on simple ways to achieve failover using RouterOS and assumes all basic configuration has already been completed on the router. Failover is designed to make sure you have a good path outside in case you lose a firewall. If your firewalls are configured such that each traffic moving interface across both firewalls is on the same subnet, you can use active-standby failover.
- To use the multi-WAN feature, you must have more than one external interface configured. If necessary, use the procedure described in Configure an External Interface.
- To make sure you understand the requirements for the multi-WAN method you choose, see About Multi-WAN and About Multi-WAN Methods.
Multi-WAN is not supported on the Firebox T10, or XTM 2 Series devices without the Pro upgrade. Multi-WAN is supported on Firebox T15 devices with Fireware v12.3 or higher. Although multi-WAN is not supported in certain cases, modem failover is supported for the Firebox T10 and T15. This is true even after an upgrade to Fireware v12.1 or higher, which converts modems to external interfaces. For more information, see Configure Modem Failover.
Configure the Interfaces
To configure the interfaces, from Fireware Web UI:- Select Network > Multi-WAN.
- In the Multi-WAN Mode drop-down list, select Failover.
- Select an interface in the list and click Move Up or Move Down to set the order for failover. The first interface in the list is the primary interface.
- To complete your configuration, you must add link monitor information as described in Configure Link Monitor.

- Click Save.
- Select Network > Configuration.
- Click the Multi-WAN tab.
- In the Multi-WAN Configuration section drop-down list, select Failover.
- Click Configure to specify a primary external interface and select backup external interfaces for your configuration. In the Include column, select the check box for each interface you want to use in the failover configuration.
- Click Move Up or Move Down to set the order for failover. The first interface in the list is the primary interface.
- To complete your configuration, you must add link monitor information as described in Configure Link Monitor.

Why does this matter? Because with Bigleaf, when one of your Internet circuits has an outage, you don’t. Your IP address doesn’t change. Your VPN, remote desktop session, SSH session, VoIP call, Web Presentation, and every other application stays up!

For maximum reliability you should use at least 2 ISP connections. The benefit of this is that you’re insulated from many issues. In addition, we recommend that you use physically diverse paths coming in to your building from unique providers, such as: fiber and cable, DSL and fixed-wireless, or T1 and cable, that way you’ll have the ultimate in Internet redundancy.
