Dmmd Ren Collar Art
Warning: This will be another picture-heavy review. I did make an effort to decrease the number of pictures I need to upload though, I'll be using more collages this time (it works for my loots, so maybe it works for reviews too). If you prefer full-size pictures please let me know. :3
I also tried out the blue background for my photobox this time (but I'm not really fond of it tbh).
Again as requested (more like I had to promise) I'll be looking at DRAMAtical Murder's Ren's Rhyme Mode ver. by Max Factory. Btw I won't be spoiling anything about the game or the character,
below is just a bit babbling how I came to own this figure.^^
View spoilerHide spoilerI only recently played DMMD so I haven't been aware of this figure for a while and it wasn't high on my priority list either (preorders are always higher on that list), because I didn't actually want to hunt it down. By pure chance I looked at the item comments a few weeks ago though and saw that GSC was selling him again. Since I wanted to spoil myself after getting paid more than I expected I went ahead and ordered him. Fast forwarding a week I received a unexpectedly huge box at my doorstep, the packaging wasn't actually all that good though. I've heard mixed reports of GSC's packaging before, so I kinda expected at least to some degree (a bit more care with expensive items like this might be advisable).
This figure is actually a first for me review-wise,
as it's the first on I review straight out of the box. :3
Speaking of it let's go ahead and have a look at it.^^
As this is a bigger figure in a large, Max Factory went with a thicker cardboard,
which makes it way sturdier.
The box design is a subdued black and blue featuring pictures of the figure on every side and shiny little hexagons evoking a 'digital' impression. Only the front has a small window, allowing a glimpse of the figure and maybe that's just me, but this kind of box (or one without any windows) give me a somewhat premium feel (maybe it's the 'secret' part). The only little complaint is the somewhat bleached out black part on the back (maybe it was stored a bit unfavorably).
The figure comes in a big blister (almost excessively so), that offers good protection for all parts, with another smaller blister attached under the figure for more stability.
Taking everything out of the box there are 6 parts: figure (with detachable head), cloak, base, beast hand and 2 crystal parts. I actually got the clear postcard too, which was apparently a limited first edition pre-order bonus.^^
While the assembly is pretty easy, I'd recommend using the instruction sheet
(at least for the base).
After putting the base together it's still basically a patterned circle, but adding the crystals and the beast hand adds a lot more to it and making it look quite elaborate.
When you look closer (though even if you don't look all that closely) there are a lot of (seam) lines and clearly visible parts where the hand was put together though. The fur-sculpting, shading and especially the claws look nice for the most part. Instead of the seam lines in the furry part I'd actually have preferred a noticeable gap
as transition between fur and claws though.
The semi-transparent crystals make a really good impression especially the color gradient, the only drawback is the fairly visible metal peg, where Ren is attached.
The first 360 w/o the cloak:
Starting off with a view at Ren's face it's striking how good and true to the character looks. The expression of his finely sculpted and painted face is a little vacant,
which I personally really like.
Contrary to his face, the hair doesn't look as good and it's not the fact that there's almost no shading, since the sculpting makes up for it. But the very same sculpting that looks lumpy in places (especially at the back of his head). There are also quite a few very small paint errors (those white dots). Additionally the strands ends aren't really sharp enough imo. The fact the different hair partitions can be seen
doesn't seem as bad though due to the hairstyle.
His ears look good though, even if his earrings seem a bit half-assed
(not being real rings, but sort of gold colored blobs).
Ren is wearing his signature studded collar with the syringe accessoire.
While the paintjob doesn't look that cleanly executed at first glance, it gives off a weathered and used look, which is nice even if potentially unintended.
The distinct line on the back of his collar does bother me though.
Further down you can see Ren's finely sculpted body, lean but well-toned from his chest to his rib cage and abs. My only complaint would be that his nipples are the same color as the rest of his skin.
They're nicely modelled, but I'd wish them to be a different hue.
His back and arms are just as well defined (also look at those gorgeous tattoos). >///<
The fingers are neatly formed with their kind of yellowish nails
(they look a tad bit animal-like, which would be extra fitting).
Since Ren's pants are very skintight there aren't too many creases, but enough to create realistic feeling. Many lines on the pants look like actual seams, furthering the lifelike impression. The black 'leather' belt is not exception,
especially with the fold at the back.
Gotta love that booty. ♥
His shoes are nicely sculpted as well with creases that suggest a thick material, though the paintjob is a bit scruffy with some rough edges.
Before actually putting the cloak on let's have a quick look under it. There are two quite distinct seam lines, which are also visible if you place the figure on a higher shelf (but not from a 'normal' display angle).
Another 360°, this time with the cloak. ^^
I much prefer displaying Ren with his cloak,
as I feel the figure isn't really complete w/o it (though I did think about displaying him half.naked just to piss off my boyfriend x3).
However the cloak is quite heavy and I have a mild fear that he'll lean in the future
or even break the crystal where the metal rod is attached,
because of the figure's balancing.
Looking closer there are quite a few faint paint errors on the on the upper cloak as well though, creating some more rough looking places.
The sculpting is quite impressive though, be it the fringes,
the tassels and the cords their attached with...
or that flowing lower cloak with it's frayed ends full of holes. Those gorgeous looking ripples add a lot of momentum to the figure, creating a very dynamic impression.

Conclusion
Well, not gonna lie, I had a lot of complaints, which is quite a shame. There are quite a few paint errors and not all of them are in places where you can't see them. As well as some flaws in the sculpt, though those aren't as bad. BUT... and that is the most important part for me, I still enjoy this figure immensely, because it is still a great depiction of a character that I grew quite attached to. As such I don't regret a single cent spent on him.^^
That's it for this review! Thanks for reading! :3
I hope you liked it and if you have some constructive criticism
(especially on the writing since English isn't my native language)
I'd really appreciate that. :3
And I really mean that, I noticed that people are quite careful with any sort of criticism where reviews are concerned, but it doesn't help me improving them.^^
Any thoughts on the figure would be very welcome too
as well as suggestions for my next review.^^
